Motorstorm: Animation

Ark were asked to produce 15 movies for the GUI backrounds to the Evolution Studios game “Motorstorm”. Each one involved something that was supposed to be going on around the festival that was Motorstorm. I worked on them all as an animator and also did a fair bit of the lighting and rendering on a few of the shots.

This shot is my favourite.

I’m a huge car nut and so this job really appealed to me. The idea was that a buggy was supposed to drive onto a twisted ramp and do a 360 degree spin in the air and land on the other side, very much like the stunt in the Bond film “The man with the golden gun”. I spent a lot of time setting up the rig for the buggy suspension becuase I really wanted to have it move realistically. I also wanted to make it look like the driver only just made it and so decided to have him spin out at the end as his suspension bottomed out on landing. The inclusion of the car cams also adds to the sense of it being a harsh ride as they are rigged to judder and jolt to sell the idea of the harsh impacts.

This is one of the previews:
