These renders are of CG models we built for the upcoming PSN game “Derrick The Deathfin”. Produced by Myself, Tim Brown and Chris Rawlinson under our Ten24 name, these characters represent just some of the papercraft styled creatures that were designed by street artist and “Vandal extraordinaire”…
This started off as an idle scribble that sat on my desk for a while until I decided to have a crack at rigging using the excellent Advanced Character tools plugin for maya. I’m no rigger so decided that adapting the character rigging tools would be the best way…
Myself and my collegue James Busby of Ten24 have just published a new CG news website called CG Everything.
The site is a place for artists, animators, modellers, producers and generally anyone with an interest in all matters CGI. It brings together all the latest news and showcases work from…
Check out my new updated 2011 Showreel. For more info on my work including breakdowns, animatics and more, you can browse the individual projects on the animation page HERE
In November 2010 Xenon Studios, newly formed by Michael Powell after the closure of Ark VFX were contacted by Director Adam Wells to help pitch for the Title Sequence of Sky Sports’ Super League coverage.
The project was a perfect opportunity for the ex-Ark team…

I wrote this blog when I was a Director and co-owner of Ark VFX which is unfortunately no longer around. But the article is worth a read so here it is:
A little after we (Andy Turner, Steven Tappin, Rich…
These are scans of my desk done using AGISoft scanning software. The scan is worked out from a number of photos taken by a Nikon D80 SLR then the software works out the geometry based on the placement of the camera on each photograph.
This is the trailer and cutscenes for the Codemasters game “Overlord”. I worked mainly as an animator on this project although there was a lot of work to be done on it so we got in another freelance animator to help out with a couple of the shots.
Back in 2003 when we started our company Ark, we directed and produced this video for Muse. My role was as co-director, artist and animator. There were really only 3 of us working on most of this project and so a decent chunk of the work was done by…
This was the my favourite of the many CocoPops ads Ark did. I was reponsible for all the animation on this one. I dont get to do much cartoon-like character animation so really enjoyed getting those characters to bowl those Coco Balls!
These movies were a collaboration with my collegue Craig Clark who modelled the Lotus Elise. We worked on it in our down time between paid projects. I’m a massive Lotus fan and I’ve been lucky enough to own a couple of Elises. The idea behind this was to…
When I was working as lead on Powerdrome, I really wanted to have a very 1920′s look, art deco/sci-fi. To that end I put together some style boards to try and illustrate my ideas.
As I was working on I-War 2, Particle Systems was expanding and working on another game that was ultimately canned when it was taken over by Argonaut PLC. The game was originally called TvR (Tanx vs Robots) but was later renamed to EXO. It looked promising, huge armoured robots…
For some reason that I cant remember now, I spent some time designing these logos for all the factions and corporations that populated the game. Probably because I thought it would add an extra dimension and partly because I just wanted to.
I had a hand in designing the european box for the game I-war, though the publishers took it upon themselves to significantly change it. But for the US Version of I-War (Independence War) I was given free reign. This was my design. I also designed the box art for…
The Club is a game by Bizarre Creations which invloves lots of people shooting each other. I directed the Performance capture session, directed sequences and was responsible for animation.
My 3 favourite sequences from this project are the intros for the characters Dragov and Kuro.
This job was for the Jameson whiskey people. It invloved fairly simple animation, party due to a false start where the original ad agencies script idea was deemed a bit “scary” to continue with. I’d already animated pretty much the whole thing to animatic standard over a week or…
Codemasters and the delevoper Triumph returned to Ark for the trailer for Overlord 2. This one was different to the first because we were to use the in-game assets rather than build all the characters as we had done for Overlord. Although we did re-use the old “minion master”…
Ark were asked to produce 15 movies for the GUI backrounds to the Evolution Studios game “Motorstorm”. Each one involved something that was supposed to be going on around the festival that was Motorstorm. I worked on them all as an animator and also did a fair bit of…
I’ve put together a showreel demonstrating some of my animation and directing work from the past few years. Most of the animation work was produced while I was a director of Ark VFX.
This job involved using the game developers own motion captured game data and a lot of their in game character models were featured due to a short timescale. My job on this was to develop and animate the sequences that all had to link up from one time period…
I’d originally Designed this character for the game Powerdrome but it was never used so in my down time decided to build him as a sniper robot and rig him for animation. It was just a whim of a project and I only had a few days time spare…
A few years ago, Ark were approached to help make a pilot TV show in the vein of 2DTV, the idea was pretty much the same i.e caricatures of politicians and celebrities doing and saying funny things. This one was good old George Bush. We were sent a model…
Driver: Parallel Lines was a huge project. 30 minutes of full CGI characters meant a huge week long motion capture shoot which I directed. Once that was done the massive task of getting the scenes done was a team effort. My role was as lead animator and sequence director…
Warning,…
I worked as lead CGI artist on the Particle Systems/Argonaut remake of Powerdrome. The original game was the inpiration for the Wipeout games of the late 90s. My Main tasks were to put together a Trailer to sell the game to publishers (above) and help design and create the…
After working on the original game I-War, I went onto be lead CGI Artist on the sequel Independence War 2 : Edge of chaos. I was developing the intro and “midtro” (i know, it’s…
I’m not really a concept artist as such, there are lots of people who can draw much better than I can, and actually when we started Ark pretty much never drew a concept sketch again because both my co directors are about the best concept artists in the business….
My first job was with the small games company Particle Systems. They were making a sci-fi space game called Dreadnaught and needed some CG movies for it. Little did I know that the entire 30 odd minutes of intros, outros and cutscenes were to be produced soley by a…
